The Day David’s Career Began
It was not in the final he won in the US Open in 1998 or in the final in Wimbledon in 2002. The statement “I feel my career has begun” came out of his mouth some years before that, in November 1995, when he was just 13 years old and was coming out of the court in the Club Universitario de Cordoba. On that day he defeated the man from Rio Cuarto Carlos Vasquetto, by then professional, in a closely fought final in three sets and won his first title in first division at local level. He was then a young boy and his performance was already outstanding at national level, but his tennis was limited to his exceptional backhand shots and great fighting spirit on the court. That was enough: he beat three figures of tennis in Cordoba and celebrated. When he came out, the journalist asked him: How do you feel?. He was waiting for David to show his great satisfaction. But that didn’t happen: “I feel my career has just begun". David had already set high goals in world tennis.
